The eighth grade students have had an opportunity to learn about the six nutrients needed by the body to carry out essential processes, the importance of the food pyramid, the functions of the digestive system, and the role the large and small intestines play in digestion to name a few.
Begin by writing your responses in a word document. Do not write the questions. Students must answer in complete sentences with no errors reflective of an eighth grader. Write the number you are answering, and your name and that of your partner.

Students will work with a partner and respond to one of the four items listed below:
- List the six nutrients that are needed by the body. For each nutrient you listed, briefly describe the role it plays in the body. Identify the functions of these essential minerals:
a- calcium
b- chlorine
c- iron
d- potassium
e- sodium
- Identify the food groups in the food pyramid and the recommended amounts for a 1,800 caloric diet. Demonstrate your understanding of the food pyramid by creating 3 healthy meals and two snacks that include 1,800 caloric diet place information in a chart. Did your meals and snack provide the recommended daily allowance according to the food pyramid?
- Explain the roles that the mouth, esophagus, and stomach play in digestion. What is chemical digestion? How is food prevented from entering the windpipe?
- Explain the role of the small and large intestine in the digestion process. Explain the role bacteria play in the large intestine. How does the pancreas aid in digestion?
